Why is there no link?

I see countless CV's on a daily basis and very often in response to an advert that I have posted. I really do get excited when I see applications as I assume that people have read the spec and are applying because they have the skills and experience to perform the role.

I get that people want to grow and that no one is a 100% match to any role. but it needs to be close enough for a recruiter or a hiring manager to understand why you applied.

So here are some quick tips:

1. Do a quick checklist against the minimum requirements.

You should at least match the majority of the items listed in this section. If you are a graduate and the role is for a Senior XYZ with more than 8 years experience, chances are that you will not be considered at all.

2. Transferable Skills

Where you strongly believe that you a skill that is easily transferred to the role that you are applying for, ensure that you highlight this in both the CV and cover letter. The same would apply to technologies required, if you experience in a similar one and know that it is almost the same, say so.

3. Context to the role

Be sure to add some specific context to your role. if you are in finance for example, you may want to include the number of accounts you manage, the size and complexity of your books and the packages you use. As a Project Manager, you may want to detail some of the major projects you have worked on listing budgets, type of project, people under management etc.

4. Add links to examples of your work

If you are in a role where you would have or need to have a portfolio of work, then please include it and ensure that it speaks to the role. If for example, you are applying as a Graphic Designer where you will be required to design logos then these need to be part of the portfolio you attach. As a developer, you can demonstrate your code.

The more relevant your application is, the better your chance of being considered will be. So make it count - show the link!
